Everything I Read This Month: January 2023

I’ve always been a reader, even if I fell out of the habit a bit during law school. Since 2022, I’ve been putting in extra effort to get back into reading for pleasure, and I am starting this year off strong! While I share specific book reviews on Cats & Coffee, I thought a monthly round up of everything I read would be a fun way to share even more great books with you, my fellow readers. This month, I’ve read some great historical fiction novels, including some time travel and sci-fi options!

Pandora by Susan Stokes-Chapman

An immersive novel based loosely on the myth of Pandora’s Box, Susan Stokes-Chapman’s Pandora is a brilliant Georgian historical fiction read. The novel follows Dora Blake, the orphaned daughter of two classicist collectors who aspires to design jewelry. Throughout the story, she strives to free herself from her tyrannical uncle’s control. Drama and lovely descriptions of ancient artifacts ensue. If you’re a fan of mythological reinterpretations, you’re going to need to order this book immediately!

Longbourn by Jo Baker

My friend gave me this amazing Pride & Prejudice-themed novel for my birthday and I stayed up super late last night finishing it. Longbourn is a retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice from the perspective of the servants. It was a quaint narrative, giving the reader a glimpse of the world around the Bennet sisters and the realities of daily life.

While my best laid plans of keeping a proper reading log fell by the wayside this year, I did manage to get a ton of reading done. While I plan to get into more book content in the new year, I wanted to close out 2022 with a round up of the best books I read this year. I hope the novels and histories I’m sharing here will inspire your next great read!

The King Arthur Trilogy features three books covering the story of Nennius, one of the earliest historians to mention Arthur, and the rise of the mythical King Arthur. Written in the dramatic detail Bernard Cornwell does best, this Arthurian series is a must-read for any British historical fiction lover!

If you’re interested in some quick reads that are as thoughtful as they are entertaining, The Empress of Rome Series by Kate Quinn is perfect for you!

Historical Fiction: The Six Tudor Queens Series by Alison Weir

There are a few greats in the historical fiction world, and Alison Weir is certainly one of them. Weir is a British author and historian, focusing on English royal women. Largely, her work focuses on the Tudor dynasty. Writing both fiction and non-fiction, Weir creates well-rounded, robust characters out of what might otherwise simply seem like historical names. And Weir’s Six Tudor Queens series is no exception. I’ve devoured this series over the past few months and am eager to share about it here!
