Trader Joe’s Brussels Sprout and Caramelized Onion Ravioli

Trader Joe’s Fresh Pasta

Fresh pasta can really dress up a dinner. Over the last couple days, we tried out two styles of fresh pasta from Trader Joes: first, the traditional cheese tortellini, and, tonight, the Brussels sprout and caramelized onion ravioli. I’m a big Brussels sprout fan, so I was eager to give these a shot.

The first thing I noticed about these ravioli was the unique coloring — the little pastas feature a two-tone coloring of the normal pasta-tan and green. The ravioli themselves were of a good size, and while one could definitely eat the entire package, it can be split into two servings quite easily. If you’re planning to make a bigger meal, I’d recommend getting two packs.

The ravioli were easy enough to cook. I boiled them for 5 minutes and then drained the water and added my sauce of choice. I decided to serve these with a canned tomato sauce that I doctored up a bit. Ideally, I’d make my own marinara, but I didn’t have the ingredients or feel like going to the grocery store again. Instead, I used an organic roasted garlic pasta sauce from Publix and incorporated fresh garlic, kale, and frozen peas. Honestly, though, they’d probably be good by themselves with some butter, salt, and cheese.

The Overall Flavor

Perhaps to be expected from any kind of filled pasta, the ravioli were pretty pasta heavy. That is to say, if you’re craving a big bowl of pasta, this will probably do the trick. The filing is subtle enough, but you can definitely taste the caramelized onions. I found that they went nicely with the kale and red sauce.

Overall, I was really happy with the ravioli. They were simple to make and satisfying. I will definitely be buying the Brussels sprout and caramelized onion ravioli again. If you’re looking to treat yourself to a dressier bowl of pasta with all the indulgence of a bowl of pasta, the Trader Joe’s Brussels Sprout and Caramelized Onion Ravioli are the way to go.
