Must-Read Romantic Comedy Books
Funny Story by Emily Henry
Emily Henry is a master of the romantic novel, and Funny Story is a great example of her skill. Blending her trademark wit and thoughtfulness, this book follows Daphne and Miles, two strangers who wind up as roommates when their respective partners break up with them (for each other). Humorous fake dating ensues (thus making it a must-read among rom com books) as Daphne and Miles try to move on from their respective heartbreaks. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry…it’s just amazing.

Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez
After connecting via a Reddit thread, Justin and Emma realize they’re both “cursed” — every time they break up with someone, that person goes on to meet their soulmate. The pair make a deal to date each other and break up, thus taking advantage of the curse for themselves. As you can imagine, this doesn’t go exactly according to plan. This book is full of witty banter, cute animals, and great characters. A rom com books must-read!
Just for the Summer is available from Amazon here.
The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood
With a delightful mix of rom-com, magical realism, and dry humor, this is a great read for anyone who theoretically likes cozy love stories but can’t handle anything overly-saccharine. The audiobook was great, and the narrator did a great job really hitting the sarcasm and humor throughout, as the excessively-introverted protagonist attempts to navigate a second chance at life after making a deal to get out of her excessively embarrassing accidental death. That’s a pretty convoluted sentence, but it’ll make sense when you read the book. Just pick it up; you won’t regret it!

Kilt Trip by Alexandra Kiley
A sweet little romance set in Scotland, Kilt Trip is a bit of an enemies-to-lovers story (that is a bit extreme) that will make you want to pack up and move to Scotland. Or maybe that’s just where my head is at all times. Lots of personal growth for the main character, Addie, too, which I love to see. Definitely gave me some inspiration for honeymoon planning! If you like this book, definitely check out Kiley’s second book, Scot and Bothered, as well!
Kilt Trip is available from Amazon here.
A Novel Love Story by Ashley Poston
A delightful mix of contemporary romance and magical realism, A Novel Love Story bends the rules of time and space to bring the main character’s favorite book series to life. It’s cute and cozy without being too saccharine, while Elsy navigates this storybook world and the one character she can’t place: a grumpy bookstore owner who doesn’t quite fit in town either.

Wild About You by Kaitlyn Hill
Kaitlyn Hill’s Wild About You is a sweet YA opposites-attract novel featuring a strong female protagonist with a new anxiety diagnosis. That’s not the crux of the story, but it’s what stuck out the most to me, as a reader with anxiety. Natalie, the main character, joins the cast of an adventure reality tv series in hopes of winning money to pay for school. Natalie is a novice to hiking and wilderness survival, but she’s willing to learn in order to win the competition. She is paired up with a grumpy know-it-all, Finn, who is dealing with his own trauma. Chaos and comedy ensue. This book is a quick, enjoyable read, with some hilarious banter throughout.
Wild About You is available from Amazon here.
When in Rome by Sarah Adams
Kicking off with an awkward car-trouble meet cute between an incognito music star and a small town baker. Said music star picked Rome, Kentucky, because she loves Audrey Hepburn and Roman Holiday and that was the closet Rome to her Nashville home. Like, what more could you ask for? Witty banter ensues, of course, along with some great lines that will make you stop and think. It’s part of a series, so if you like this one, definitely check the other books out, as well!
When in Rome is available from Amazon here.
The Irish Goodbye by Amy Ewing
A delightfully cute and cozy enemies-to-loves type story, The Irish Goodbye follows a NYC photographer who needs time away to process a sudden loss. So, she heads to Ireland — to Inishmore Island, specifically — where she runs into (literally) a grumpy local who has begrudgingly returned home after moving away to Dublin. If you’re a fan of romantic comedy books where the town becomes its own character, this is perfect for you!

Story of My Life by Lucy Score
The number of times I was literally laughing out loud reading this book…! So good! Described as “A Gilmore Girls meets Schitt’s Creek redemption romcom“, I had high hopes for this one, and it certainly delivered. The story is funny, full of Gilmore Girl-esque townies and town meetings, which the protagonist, Hazel, has to navigate upon her arrival from NYC.
In short, Hazel, a writer’s-blocked romance author, dives head first into the tiny town of Story Lake in an effort to inspire her overdue manuscript. Right from the start, she runs into trouble — think “I got hit by a deer!” a la Gilmore Girls — and has to regain her ground in her new town. Combine that with a potential hero-inspiring-love-interest and Hazel has her hands full. There’s fake dating, there’s humor, it’s the start of a new Lucy Score series, there are barn yard animals, and it’s currently free on Kindle Unlimited. You just have to read it.

First-Time Caller by B.K. Borison
I saw this book all over Instagram for a few days before I decided to give it a try. The premise made itself clear pretty quickly in the audiobook (great narration, by the way): Aiden Valentine, a romance hotline radio host, is in a slump, until he meets Lucie Stone through the show. Both protagonists are strong, well-developed characters and they are pretty funny throughout. I could have done without a third-act-breakup kind of drama, but the witty banter throughout balanced it out for me.
First-Time Caller is available from Amazon here.
