Why The Litter-Robot 4 is a Game Changer in Cat Care
A WiFi-enabled, automatic, self-cleaning litter box for cats, this latest evolution of the Litter-Robot by Whisker is a game changer in cat care.
Like with the previous model, you can expect all of the benefits of an automatic, self-cleaning box.
Here are some of the major benefits of this automatic litter box:
Self-Cleaning: No Scooping Required
With a sophisticated monitoring system, the Litter-Robot 4 is quick to realize a cat has entered the unit. A timed period starts once the cat exits the unit, after which the cleaning cycle begins. Using the Litter-Robot’s patented sifting process, this smart litter box cycles and separates waste from the otherwise clean litter. Waste falls into the trash bin below, while the clean litter is returned to the litter bed. I find that this means litter lasts longer than with traditional litter boxes, which is a nice bonus. The cleaning cycle is whisper quiet, too — a major improvement over the Litter-Robot 3 in my experience!
Maximum Odor Control
Besides the obvious benefit of no scooping required, this automatic litter box drastically reduces odors. With each cleaning cycle, waste clumps fall into the tightly-sealed drawer below the litter bed. This is one of my favorite benefits of the Litter-Robot, and it makes it much more pleasant to keep in higher traffic areas, like bedrooms.
Multi-Cat Friendly Pet Monitoring
Ok, I really didn’t think I would care about it, but the WiFi-enabled smart litter box and monitoring app are pretty cool. The app lets you create profiles for your cats and monitors their weights. You can see stats on how often the Litter-Robot is used on the app, as well as manage cycling timing, sleep mode, the light level in the dome, and more.
The app will also give you notifications when the waste bag needs to be replaced, or alert you if a cycle is interrupted. The latter kept happening to me, and I wasn’t sure why. Turns out, Emory kept sticking her head in to watch the cycle as it started, which would cause the cycle to pause. After a few seconds, if the sensors are clear, the cycle starts right back up.

Litter-Robot offers a variety of thoughtfully-designed furniture to house Litter-Robots and disguise them in plain sight. You can add on an extra OdorTrap Pod to the furniture, as well, for even more odor control. I haven’t purchased any of these so far, but I have my eye on the two pictured below.
Must-Have Accessories for the Litter-Robot 4
Beyond furniture, there are some accessories you can get with the self-cleaning litter box that are definitely worth the money. Some come in the bundles, so be sure to check exactly what comes with the Litter-Robot bundle you buy (sometimes, Whisker has good deals and Litter-Robot sale options on these bundles).
First and foremost, we have the Litter-Robot Litter Trap™ Mat and have found it works great. Designed to fit around the Litter-Robot, this is the only litter-catching mat that has worked for us. It’s easy to clean, with a folder-style design, and can be hosed-down if needed.
Second, the Litter-Robot 4 Fence has been a great addition to our set up. We didn’t use this piece at first, because it does rather drastically increase the height of the litter box entrance. This is so especially considering the height of our previous model versus the Litter-Robot 4. When we swapped the units, we kept the guard off to ensure the cats wouldn’t be discouraged by the height. However, we recently added the fence piece back on and it’s greatly reduced litter tracking outside of the unit. It also prevents leakage outside of the globe, which is a major benefit.
My Experience with the New Litter-Robot
The Litter-Robot 4 has been a great purchase for my household (so much so that I consider it one of the best gifts for cats you can find!). The cats took to it right away, and it is the primary litter box in our house. We have a second, traditional litter box set up just in case, but all three cats prefer the self-cleaning one, instead.
Litter-Robot 3 vs. 4
In all, the Litter-Robot 4 improves upon all of the benefits of its predecessor (more info on that model here) Where the older model has really good odor control, for example, the newer is exceptional. The best upgrades to the Litter-Robot 4, in my opinion, are the design of the waste drawer and the noise level of the cycling.
Swapping out the older version of this self cleaning litter box with the new Litter-Robot 4
With this newer model, the waste drawer holds the bags better, whereas they often slipped and came undone in the older model. Swapping the bag is cleaner and easier with the newer model. Plus, it doesn’t incorrectly read as full as often as the Litter-Robot 3, which had a wider, flatter waste drawer.
As for the noise level, the Litter-Robot 4 is super quiet, with cycles making the noise of a rather quiet air filter, in my opinion. The predecessor, while not loud, per se, was certainly not quite like the new one.

Is the Litter-Robot 4 Worth the Money?
Yes, the Litter-Robot 4 is well worth the money, even more so than the previous model of automatic litter box. Between the ease of cleaning, the handy app controls, and the fact that it works so well with multi-cat households, this self cleaning litter box is definitely worth the price.
