A Kansas native now living in Florida, Sarah Penner began writing in 2015 and is now a full-time writer. Penner’s first book, The Lost Apothecary, is an international and New York Times best seller. It is currently in the works as a drama series, as well. Like The London Séance Society, The Lost Apothecary is also a work of historical fiction centering on dark arts.

Penner’s novel follows two young women who work as mediums and perform séances to help solve crimes. Interestingly, the women have varying degrees of belief in the subject, which proves challenging throughout the plot. Vaudeline D’Allaire, a renowned spiritualist in Paris, takes on Lena Wicks as a pupil. Lena, ever logic-driven and distrustful of the occult, is trying to solve the mystery of her sister’s death. The women team up with a men’s-only Séance Society to solve a mysterious crime. However, they quickly find a cover-up that goes deeper than they expected and could prove fatal for them both.
My Thoughts on The London Séance Society by Sarah Penner
I read this novel in a day and a half. That should tell you a lot about how much I enjoyed the story. This meant shirking chores and staying up late to read. In doing so, I devoured this novel and wished there was more once it was done.
As I mentioned before, fans of historical fiction will enjoy the researched details that Penner includes throughout the novel. The author’s description at the end of her process and inspiration is also an interesting read. This is especially so after all the spiritualist details included throughout the story.
