Longbourn by Jo Baker

Longbourn by Jo Baker

My friend gave me this amazing Pride & Prejudice-themed novel for my birthday and I stayed up super late last night finishing it. I hadn’t planned on writing a full book review on it. I was just reading it for pure fun. However, I found I loved it so much I wanted to share a bit about it! Jo baker’s Longbourn is a retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice from the perspective of the servants. It was a quaint narrative, giving the reader a glimpse of the world around the Bennet sisters and the realities of daily life.

What I Liked Most about Longbourn

What I liked most about Longbourn was that it showed the world of Georgian England going on at the same time as the famous story. The characters interact with the military, beyond the sisters’ flirtations. Further, there are glimpses into the dark reality of the world that the upper classes (at least, upper class women like the Bennet sisters) were typically shielded from.

What I Liked Least (AKA: What Challenged Me Most)

I didn’t *love* the way that Elizabeth Bennet was portrayed, but I think that’s probably the point. It was uncomfortable to read this heroine that we all know and love as oblivious and defensive towards the household workers. Really makes you think.
