Creating a Romantic Wedding Theme with Your Wedding Flowers & Arrangements

Regardless of the style and theme of the wedding, wedding flowers are always an important part of these special days. Wedding bouquet arrangements and floral decorations can take on many shapes, sizes, and colors, setting whatever tone you want for your big day. The arrangements can be based on your wedding colors, or incorporate a wider range of hues.

For a romantic ambiance, I am sharing some of the most beautiful wedding flowers inspiration my husband and I used to create our perfect wedding flowers with our florist. Our wedding theme centers on navy and greens (more on our wedding color scheme here!) and highlights rich, earthy colors alongside romantic roses and pops of blue, navy, and white. My Navy & Emerald Green Wedding Theme

For me and Brett, picking our wedding colors was pretty easy. Green is my favorite color, and blue is his. Together, these two colors make up one of my favorite tartan patterns: Black Watch Tartan.

So, once we had the green and navy basis, we began to consider how to weave in (pun intended) the tartan as an accent. Beyond that, my engagement ring is green and gold, so gold seems a natural accent for our choices — plus, pairing green and gold is just such a classic color combination!

Beyond these reasons for picking navy and emerald for our wedding color scheme, we later learned the symbolism of the two colors. Green represents new beginnings and harmony, while blue symbolizes stability, loyalty, and trust.

Wedding Party Flower Arrangements

Bridal Bouquet Ideas & Bridesmaids’ Bouquets

Picking out suitable flowers for a bridal bouquet and bridesmaids’ bouquets is an important task. Oftentimes, these wedding bouquets will double as table wedding flower arrangements throughout the reception. Where bridal bouquets are typically bigger than the wedding bouquet for bridesmaids, the bouquet can be whatever size and shape you want it to be. Styles can include cascading bouquets and hand-tied bouquets, for example, or discuss the theme you’re looking to evoke with your florist, such as rustic or romantic.

A few important things to consider when deciding on a bridal bouquet include: the bride’s height (consider your shoes!), the silhouette of the wedding dress, the color of the wrapping, and the weight of the bouquet itself. Wedding bouquets can get heavy quickly, so talk this over with your florist to make sure you’re happy with the size, shape, and weight.

Popular flowers to consider for bridal bouquets and bridesmaids’ bouquets include: hydrangeas, roses, peonies, delphiniums, lily of the valley, thistle, and dried greenery such as eucalyptus and lavender.

Boutonnieres & Boutonniere Cards for the Groom & Groomsmen

Whatever flowers you and your fiancé decide on for the bridal bouquet should be replicated in smaller form for the men’s boutonnieres.

Besides the traditional boutonniere style for guys, pocket boutonnieres are a great option. These cards feature essentially the same flowers that the traditional style would have, but on a card that slips directly into the jacket pocket. A benefit of this style is that they don’t get jostled around as much as traditional boutonnieres might, and they are a sweet keepsake at the end of the night.

Wedding Flower Centerpieces & Floral Table Arrangements

As mentioned above, the bridal party’s bouquets are often incorporated into table arrangements throughout the night. At the end of the night, the bride and bridesmaids simply pick up their bouquets to take home.

Besides the bouquets as table arrangements, you will likely need a few more wedding flower arrangements and centerpieces for other tables, such as the welcome table, cake table, bars, and so on.

Ideally, wedding flower centerpieces and table arrangements will incorporate the same or similar flowers as the bouquets and boutonnieres. Often, the wedding florals are accentuated with dried greenery like eucalyptus and different types of ferns or ivy that run along the center of the tables. There are a number of types of eucalyptus that can be used, depending on the style and vibe you’re looking for, from traditional spiral eucalyptus to weeping eucalyptus.

These elegant table arrangements can incorporate different blue and green flowers, or even different color roses. Accentuate these florals with pretty candlesticks or floating candle arrangements to add depth and drama to the ambiance. These accent pieces, along with the linens and tableware you choose, are a great way to incorporate your wedding colors, as well!

Ceremony Decor

It is easy to forget that the ceremony may call for flower arrangements of its own. This is especially the case if your wedding is at a different location than the reception. Areas to consider when picking out your romantic ceremony decor include: archways, tables, altars, and the aisle.

Similar to the table arrangements described above, winding displays of greenery are lovely along the aisle or any staircases you may be walking down. Of course, you could always opt for a beautiful floral arch, as well!

Questions to Ask Your Wedding Florist:

• Are the flowers you like in season at the time of your wedding?
  
  
• Are there any other color options the florist would recommend in your desired wedding color scheme?
  
  
• How long do the flowers last once they’re arranged into a bouquet, boutonniere, or table arrangement? Can flowers be revived throughout the night if they start to fade?
  
  
• Can you preserve the flowers after the wedding? If so, how?
  
  
• Will the desired flowers and bouquet style suit the bride and bridesmaids’ heights?
  
  
• Should the maid of honor’s bouquet be larger than the other bridesmaid’s bouquets?
  
  
• Will the florist help coordinate donation of the remaining flowers after the end of the reception?
  

Concluding Thoughts on Picking Your Wedding Flowers

Overall, don’t over-complicate things when it comes to your wedding flowers! Looking up inspiration photos ahead of any meetings with florists is a great idea, especially if you aren’t really sure what you want in regard to wedding flowers. Once you narrow down what you like (or take note of what you don’t like!) it becomes easier to build a theme and design in your own mind. Bring inspiration photos when you meet with your florist and don’t be afraid to say if you don’t like something!
