Factors to Consider When Choosing Nail Clippers for Cats

When it comes to picking out nail clippers for cats, bear in mind that the best pair is the pair you can use comfortably. There are lots of pet nail trimming tools out there, and some can be rather intimidating.

For cats, though, with their small nails, you won’t need the large breed nail trimmers designed for large dogs. Instead, cat nail clippers should be small, lightweight, and easy to maneuver.

In short, what you should be looking for are nail clippers that are comfortable for you to maneuver, easy to open and close like a good pair of scissors, and an appropriate size for little cat nails.

The Best Cat Nail Clippers to Buy

A good pair of cat nail cutters should look like small scissors, measuring approximately three to five inches from end to end. The grip dimensions tend to be about three inches wide. Most styles have some kind of grippy, non-slip plastic material on the handles.

When trimming cat nails, pet nail trimmers with a half-moon design are the easiest to handle. Some clippers have a straight line from handle to the half-moon nail cutter, where others have an angled clipper. I’ve used both, but tend to prefer the former (this pair, specifically); I find it easier to keep an eye on the nail bed with the straight line style.

A third option is a nail trimmer with a slightly upward angled blade. I’ve not tried this style yet, but I could see where the slight angle could be beneficial, especially with cats with longer hair.

Where to Buy Nail Clippers for Your Cat

Chewy is my go-to store for cat supplies. They have a large catalogue of pet nail care tools, with most of their cat nail scissor trimmers available for under $15. Similarly, Amazon has a large offering, though the prices seem to vary more than at Chewy.

Further Advice on Trimming Your Cat’s Nails

I have a whole article of advice on trimming cats’ nails here. In short, I highly recommend having your vet trim the nails the first time so they can teach you how to hold or swaddle your cat.

More importantly, they can show you how far down on the nail to cut. While it can be pretty easy to see where the quick starts on your cat’s nails, some nails are more opaque or darker, making it more difficult to see how far is too far.
