Bows of all kinds have been making a comeback, whether it’s with fabric prints, actual ribbon bows, or even accents on shoes. Dainty and feminine by nature, ribbon bows have an almost nostalgic feel to them for us millennials. I certainly wore my fair share of hair bows as a kid and even into high school. And, hey, I just bought my first proper hair bow in over a decade the other day as a birthday present to myself! So, maybe there’s something to this delicate detail’s comeback. Bows, especially outside of the holiday season, can easily seem childish or infantilizing on adult women. However, there are plenty of non-childish options available that are a good balance of feminine and, dare I say, even a bit nuanced.
If you’re concerned about a bow leaning a little too far into what Pinterest calls the coquette aesthetic, then try a hair bow that is thinner and more minimal in its design. Opting for a darker color, like my dark green bow above, also helps move away from the ultra-girly. I was afraid of looking tacky by wearing a bow as a full grown woman and I was searching for options that looked elegant and more understated than the bows we put in our children’s hair. This is one of the first articles that came up and I was so glad to find it. I love the look of the thin satin bow the most. But now I am going to buy and try some of the other options as well.
