Tiny But Mighty
If you’ve followed the cat community on Instagram, you’ve probably come across Kitten Lady Hannah Shaw. I’ve been following Kitten Lady for a few years now. Time and again, I have always been so impressed with the insight and ingenuity Shaw exhibits in rescuing and raising kittens. Shaw’s kitten rescue resource book, Tiny But Mighty, is available on August 6, 2019 and I was lucky enough to preview the book.
An Easy-to-Understand How-To Guide for Kitten Rescue
Unsurprisingly, Shaw’s book mirrors the easy communicative style of her social media presence. Shaw does a great job explaining the lesser-known facts that cat people — fosters and owners alike — should know.
For example, I was particularly impressed with Shaw’s explanation of kittens as “tiny carnivores.” As someone who loves cats but does not have a veterinarian background, I appreciate Shaw’s explanation of obligate carnivores (page 122). Where other resources can be difficult to follow, Shaw does a good job of breaking the science down into easily digestible pieces. Importantly, Shaw does so without talking down to her readers.
Cat Facts for All Feline Fans
Like with the discussion of obligate carnivores, Shaw provides detailed explanations to common feline viruses (page 175) and GI parasites (page 202). This detailed tables feature symptoms descriptions, incubation periods, treatment options, and preventative measures, among other information. It is comprehensive and comprehensible.
Cats, Crafts, and Cuteness
Not only does Shaw break down the science of raising kittens, Shaw also provides general cuteness throughout. Besides adorable kitten pictures — as if we needed more cuteness — Shaw describes how to make adorable little paper hats for your cat! I do love a nice craft. Louis probably wishes I didn’t bookmark the Cat Hat how-to page, though, because I fully intend to make him a hat (see page 277).
Raising kittens can be harrowing, but Shaw makes kitten rescuing more understandable and less intimidating. Whether you’re looking to get into fostering, or you’re just looking to bolster your own feline knowledge base, Shaw’s Tiny But Mighty is a great resource.
Tiny But Mighty is available for sale on August 6, 2019 for $25 from Plume (ISBN: 9871524744069)
