Decorating Ideas for Apartment Patios

Cute & Useful Ideas for Apartment Patios

Now that our new apartment’s interior is coming together, complete with cottagecore inspired pieces, I’m turning my attention to our patio. Our new patio is rather sizable, a concave wrap-around alternative and lines the three rooms of our unit. It’s narrow, but has some really usable space. Since it has some nice shade, as well, I want to take full advantage of it during the nice spring weather and nurture my interest in plants and flowers. Whatever size the patio, an apartment balcony can be a great little oasis, particularly for those with green thumbs. Read on for decor ideas for apartment patios, plus ways to optimize your outdoor space this season!

Things to Consider when Decorating Your Patio

First things first, I recommend you consider the climate you live in. Is it really sunny where you are, or do you have much more shade and cloud cover? Does it rain a lot? What about pollen? (This article — and my seasonal allergies — reminded me of pollen!)

As a Floridian, it’s important to consider furniture and accents that are durable, both in regard to sun exposure and inclement weather. And speaking of inclement weather, we’re approaching hurricane season, so it’s important to get things that can be pulled indoors in the case of a severe storm.

Tables & Chairs

Currently, we have two little circular folding tables. One is larger, big enough for Brett and I to sit around and have drinks or dinner, and the second is more of a side table. Depending on the dimensions of your patio, there are some great folding circular tables at Target that suit outdoor dining quite well. Alternatively, I came across some half-circle options which I’m finding intriguing as space-efficient and elegant. For a table that works double-time, check out this storage-plus-side-table option which would be perfect for a little patio garden bar.

As for chairs, we have had these netted mesh chairs from Target for over three years and they have held up incredibly well. Better still, they stack, making them super space efficient. They’re nice for when you’re sitting outside reading or having cocktails, but a bit reclined for eating. Instead, for dinners al fresco, try minimalist chairs like these from a West Elm set or these folding options from Target, which are more akin to a dining room table.

One thing to remember when it comes to tables — or any patio furniture, really — is that it’s likely going to rust. Depending on the amount of space you have, you can try to clean rust stains off with some household cleaners or items like baking soda and white vinegar. I haven’t done this yet, but plan to give it a shot.

Gardening Accents & Tools

Here is where my real excitement lies with decorating our balcony: the garden options. Previously, I had a mid-size stand from Ikea that worked well enough — it was cheap, a good size, and easy to move around — but it had wooden legs which began to rot because of the Florida rain and humidity. (Side note: particularly if your balcony doesn’t have great drainage, stick with metal or plastic options.)

To replace that little stand, I’m hoping to get some kind of wire shelf a la Gal Meets Glam/Julia Berolzheimer (but less rusty and more Florida-proof). Something lightweight, preferably foldable or easy to assemble/disassemble, to hold small and medium sized planters. At $55, this option from Amazon is in my price range and seems to tick those boxes (here’s the taller option). This is a great option from West Elm if you’re into a more modern look as well.

Besides a plant shelf, I’ve been eyeing some bigger planters as well, but haven’t committed to any yet. I’ve been looking into the best desert plants for low maintenance options, which is pretty inspiring! If my green thumb picks up, I’m planning on getting one of these 12-inch wide raised planter boxes to try my hand at growing vegetables. (This stand from West Elm is also #plantmomgoals for me.)

More in my wheelhouse at the moment, these colorful options from West Elm (which are currently on sale) are calling my name, particularly the blue and terracotta options.

Lighting Options & Outdoor Candles

Previously, we had some sweet little fairy lights (similar to these) that added a bit of sparkle to our patio. They were easy to use and had a remote we could even keep inside to turn them on and off. While the set we had lasted some time, they ultimately fell victim to the poor drainage with our old balcony, so I’m in the market for some replacements.

I love the look of Edison bulbs or bistro-style lighting like these. They add such a nice touch to whatever size space you have, while also serving useful light. This set is particularly striking, featuring both the delicate fairy light vibe plus the bistro-style look. To hang them, try these easy-to-remove Command Outdoor Light Clips.

Lastly, as someone who gets eaten alive by bugs, I’m here to remind you to pick up a citronella candle or two (or a plant of it!). World Market and Target have some especially cute candle options; I’m eyeing this peach option myself.
