Tips for Laundry Room Organization

Laundry room organization is key for keeping this chore quick and mostly pain free. Oftentimes, I find that it feels like there’s always clothing to wash or towels I forgot to dry. Truth be told, laundry is pretty much my least favorite chore. However organizing your laundry room can save you time and energy in the long run. It also helps keep your clothes clean and fresh, and can even extend the longevity of your items. Here, I’m sharing some simple tips for creating a sustainable laundry room organization system.

Create a Laundry Room Storage System

Space can be at a premium in laundry rooms. If you need more storage space for your laundry room, consider creating a system where everything has its place. If you’re a fan of cute baskets and everything The Container Store has to offer, then this will be a fun project for you. You may want to consider checking out lower cost options for baskets, or even visiting any local Amazon bin stores to help cut costs. Don’t be afraid to maneuver your washer and dryer around if you have the space; making them easier to access means laundry will go more smoothly from the start.

Organize Clothing by Color With Designated Hampers

Skip sorting clothing by color in the laundry room. Get a multi-compartment laundry sorter like this one to separate clothing and towels by color before they even leave the bedroom.

The three-compartment style works really well for our household. One hamper is for light colors, the middle for darks, and the third is for pieces that don’t get dried. That way, no matter who does the laundry, we always know what gets dried, and we don’t have to waste time sorting lights and darks.

Use Baskets to Store Smaller Items

Once you have a workable space, use baskets, shelves, hooks, and other items to store laundry detergent and other supplies. It’s easy to keep detergent in a proper spot, but what about dryer balls or dye trapping sheets?

To keep small items organized, use baskets to store them. Baskets with lids can help prevent spills and make cleanup easier. Clear bins like these or baskets with wide weaves make it easier to see what supplies are where. You might find a small rolling cart to be useful, especially if you have a bit of a gap between your washer and dryer. I personally have my eye on this metal and dark wood rolling cart; I like how low-profile it is.

Add a Hook or Rack to Hang Items

If you don’t have enough hooks or racks built in to your laundry room as it is, consider adding some yourself. You can find these at hardware stores, home improvement centers, and Amazon in a variety of styles, sizes, and uses. You know your routine best, so choose one that works well for your needs.

If you don’t have the space to install a hanging drying rack or a closet rod, check out a foldable option like this one for any delicates you don’t put in the dryer. Store it between the washer and dryer or hang it on a wall with command strips to keep it out of the way.

Similarly, if you are able to install a drying rack but are still feeling tight for space, check out space-saving hangers like this option or this retractable, mounted option to make the most of the area.

Choose Folding Items Where Possible

Even if you have an abundance of space at your disposal, every laundry room organization system can benefit from foldable laundry baskets. We use Command Hooks to hang them on the wall when not in use, so we (theoretically) always know where they are. It’s not a fool-proof system, but it’s definitely been helpful in keeping the laundry room neat and orderly!

Install Shelves & Wall Storage

Opt for small shelves or even a bath cabinet to create a bit of storage space where there is none. You can go as utilitarian or as decorative as you’d like with this. I really want this Anthropologie cabinet, but this is probably a more reasonable choice. For an extra streamlined space, consider painting any hooks the same color as the room’s walls.

The Command Hook brand has some great options that don’t require nails, like this little cubby and these floating shelves. Just be sure that the adhesive has had enough time to cure before you put anything of weight not hem!
